End-of-Grid Wind Farm Support

With a long track record of remote power projects in Australia, Powercorp is now expanding their technology base onto the main Western Australia electricity grid.

As part of the Renewable Remote Power Generation Program, Verve Energy has completed a project to build a “mini” wind farm at Kalbarri and installed two 850kW Enercon E48 wind turbines on the outskirts of the town. Kalbarri is on the northern fringe of the main WA electricity grid, the South West Interconnected System (SWIS).

The turbines will improve the quality of the electricity supply and increase the capacity of the local electrical network. These improvements will be achieved through a combination of suitable wind turbine technology, special voltage control equipment and smart component algorithms.

Powercorp supplied Verve Energy a STATCOM Dynamic Voltage Compensation System to provide the voltage control. This is designed to implement Verve Energy’s system algorithms so that both the wind farm and STATCOM can benefit the local distribution system.

The scope of works included the complete supply of one containerized STATCOM +/- 600kvar to be connected to the Kalbarri windfarm. The STATCOM provides dynamic reactive (kVAR) support to smooth out voltage fluctuations caused by the windfarm.

In addition to the STATCOM, Powercorp installed a flywheel system to evaluate the effects of providing power to compensate for the windfarm’s real (MW) power fluctuations. This exercise is part of the REDI grant Powercorp have undertaken with AusIndustry and will allow Powercorp to leverage its existing knowledge, practical experience and previous hard work into the development of a world-leading energy storage system, suitable for use in multi-megawatt grid connected wind farms and other network hotspots.
